15 Off-Ice Stickhandling Drills to Dangle Like Datsyuk #HockeyAtHome

Matt Schwartz of Quest Hockey and the Hockey Players Club demonstrates 15 off-ice stickhandling drills you can do at home to dangle like Pavel Datsyuk.

Pavel Datsyuk wasn’t born with silky danglicious hands. Instead, the “Magic Man” worked incessantly to develop all of his on-ice skills, including ankle-breaking dekes and his insane backhand.

Try these 15 off-ice stickhandling drills at home to dangle like Datsyuk:

  1. Side Datsyuk [0:10]: Arrange two pucks to stickhandle around to your forehand side 12-18 inches apart from one another. Stickhandle a puck in a figure-8 pattern always using your backhand to pull the puck between the two stationary pucks backward, towards your heels.
  2. Behind Datsyuk [0:23]: Arrange one puck to stickhandle around to your forehand side with a second puck positioned 12-18 inches behind it. Stickhandle a puck in a figure-8 pattern always using your backhand to pull the puck between the two stationary pucks backward, towards your body.
  3. Side and Behind Datsyuk [0:40]: Using 3 pucks to stickhandle around, combine the (1) side Datsyuk and (2) behind Datsyuk. Begin by stickhandling the figure-8 of the side Datsyuk before transitioning to the figure-8 of the behind Datsyuk.
  4. Side, 45, Behind Datsyuk [1:03]: Add one “45” puck to the (3) side and behind Datsyuk set up to complete a square of pucks. Think of the puck nearest to your foot as the “home” puck. Proceed to do Datsyuk figure-8’s with each of the other 3 stationary pucks always using the “home” puck as one of the two pucks to be stickhandling around, starting with the side Datsyuk, then the “45” Datsyuk, and then the behind Datsyuk and repeat.
  5. Side Datsyuk “L” BH Over Puck 3 [1:35]: Similar to the (3) side and behind Datsyuk but this time the behind puck is placed out in front. Begin with a side Datsyuk figure-8 before using your forehand to push your puck straight above the top puck where you use your backhand to curl the puck around the top puck and then your forehand to puck the puck between the top puck and puck nearest your foot before using your forehand to push to the side puck to repeat the drill.
  6. Side Datsyuk to Wide BH Over Puck 3 [1:58]: Similar to the (5) side Datsyuk “L” BH Over Puck but this time arrange your top puck in front of your body instead of directly above the puck nearest your foot. Do the same stickhandling pattern as the (5) side Datsyuk “L” BH Over Puck, this time extending further to your backhand for the top puck.
  7. Side Datsyuk to Wide BH Over Puck 3 FH Over Puck 4 [2:17]: Add a 4th puck to the (6) Side Datsyuk to Wide BH Over Puck 3 setup to add a second horizontal Datsyuk figure-8 with your top puck.
  8. Side Datsyuk FH Around Puck 3 [2:38]: With the same 3 pucks setup as the (6) Side Datsyuk to Wide BH Over Puck 3, do the side Datsyuk and use your forehand to push your puck between the bottom and top pucks and stickhandle a complete circle around the top puck before using your backhand to pull towards your feet and start your side Datsyuk again.
  9. Side Datsyuk BH Around Puck 3 [3:01] With the same setup and pattern as (8) Side Datsyuk FH Around Puck 3 but this time use your backhand to circle the top puck before pulling back towards your feet and restarting your side Datsyuk.
  10. Four Puck Outside In Slide [3:23]: In front of your body instead of to the side, arrange two sets of pucks, one on your forehand and other on your backhand, 12-18 inches apart. Stickhandle your puck to your forehand side around the furthest puck using your backhand to complete the first half of a side Datsyuk before using your forehand to pull the puck across your body to the furthest puck on your backhand side and then using your forehand to pull the puck between the backhand set and using your backhand to pull across your body and over to your forehand half Datsyuk to restart the drill.
  11. Four Puck Infinity Slide [3:43]: With the same puck setup as the (10) Four Puck Outside In Slide, do the same drill but do one full and one half of a figure-8 on the forehand set of pucks before pulling to the backhand set of pucks to do one full and one half of a figure-8.
  12. Side Datsyuk to BH Through Vertical Figure 8 [4:18]: Add a 4th puck above the top puck of the (5) Side Datsyuk “L” BH Over Puck 3 setup. Do a side Datsyuk before using your forehand to pull the puck to the top set of pucks to do a figure-8 using your backhand to pull between the two top pucks before pulling back towards your feet to restart the drill.
  13. Front Stickhandle Quick Pull to Side Datsyuk [4:42]: With the same set up as the (1) Side Datsyuk, begin with your puck out in front stickhandling side to side before using your backhand to pull the puck back towards your body and pushing the puck to your forehand side to perform a side Datsyuk figure-8 and return the puck back out in front of you.
  14. Side Datsyuk Pull Through the Legs [5:03]: With the same set up as the (1) Side Datsyuk, do the first half of the side Datsyuk figure-8 before pulling the puck behind your body and using your forehand to pull the puck between your feet and back onto your stick.
  15. Double Side Datsyuk Stack [5:23]: Arrange two (1) Side Datsyuk setups with one 18-24 inches above the other on your forehand side. With your feet positioned between the two sets of pucks, perform side Datsyuk figure-8’s on each set before pushing or pulling to the other.
