Former Cornell Standout & Assistant Coach Topher Scott Shares His Hockey Journey

Topher Scott sat down with Brandon Rubeo of the Hockey Players Club to discuss his hockey journey as a player and coach and how he’s working diligently to share his knowledge and passion for the game with others.

Topher Scott was born into a hockey family just outside of Chicago, Illinois. Thanks to a great support system, including family, coaches, and the local hockey community, Topher was competing for his hometown Chicago Steel in the USHL at just the age of 15 years old.

Topher discusses the lessons he learned battling in the USHL that earned him the opportunity to play for the Cornell Big Red. And not only step into the lineup right away but contribute offensively, scoring 24 points his freshman season — an impressive point total for any NCAA player.

Also, he reflects on the character and makeup of his 2004-05 Big Red team that won the 2005 ECAC Championship.

Upon the completion of his senior season, Topher played 2 years of pro hockey in the CHL before accepting an opportunity to begin his coaching career at the Miami of Ohio while also furthering his education — an opportunity he couldn’t pass up even if he still had the itch to play!

Since, Topher has pursued coaching with the same tenacity and competitive spirit as he brought to his playing days.

After 1 year as an assistant at Miami and 5 years as an assistant with his alma mater Big Red, Topher left the college coaching ranks to work with younger players and expand his coaching reach via The Hockey Think Tank.

According to Mr. Scott, “The Hockey Think Tank’s mission to provide as much hockey education and inspirational content as we can. We want to be a vehicle for positive hockey experiences.”
