Today in Hockey History: Lemieux’s 5 Goals Overshadow Mullen’s Hat Trick at MSG

April 9, 1993: Imagine being a 20-year-old rookie goaltender named Corey Hirsch. It’s your 4th game in your NHL career and first at home in the infamous Madison Square Garden.

The Pittsburgh Penguins waltz into the Garden gunning for their 16th win in a row behind a fiery hall-of-fame offense.

Tom Barrasso, the Pens goalie for those who don’t know, recorded two primary assists — some sick sauce passes to Lemieux and Jagr for breakaways.

Ron Francis recorded his 100th point of the season, for the second time in his career.

Meanwhile, the hometown kid, “Slippery Rock” Joe Mullen scored a hat-trick, including an even-strength, power-play, and shorthanded goal.

Only to be outdone by the “the big guy” Mario Lemieux who brought MSG’s crowd to their feet with his 5th goal of the campaign.

Rookie Rangers goaltender Corey Hirsch was pulled after Lemieux’s third, the Penguins fifth of the game. Veteran Mike Richter didn’t fare any better, also allowing 5 goals on the day.

Adding goals by Larry Murphy and Jaromir Jagr, the Penguins earned their 16th victory in a row winning 10-4 against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
